The Russian Navy Leaves the Mediterranean Sea

The last submarine of the Russian Navy has left the Mediterranean Sea.

Following the fall of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad and Russia's loss of control over Syria's power, many Russian ships departed from the port of Tartus in a short period of Time, reports Militaire.

On January 2, the last Russian submarine left the Mediterranean Sea. According to objective monitoring data, there are no Russian surface or submarine ships remaining in Tartus port.

According to Naval News, the last vessel to depart from the Mediterranean was the submarine 'Novorossiysk' (B-61). It left under the cover of night through the Straits of Gibraltar, and its movement was confirmed by the Portuguese navy.

It is currently unknown whether the exit of the submarine and ships from the region is final or just part of a planned rotation.

It is worth noting that the port of Tartus was the only Russian naval base in the Mediterranean. Further use of the port depends on relations between Russia and the new Syrian authorities.

In the event of negative developments, Russia might permanently lose this base.
