Officials from the USA and Russia have held talks on the possibility of resuming the sale of Russian gas to Europe through the American side as a mediator. After the war in Ukraine, Europe sharply reduced imports of Russian gas, but now there is a possibility of restoring this process, sources familiar with the situation believe.

US President Donald Trump is making efforts for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, which could facilitate the restoration of gas supplies. According to sources, bilateral negotiations may help strengthen relations with Russia and President Putin concerning gas issues.

'If this level of cooperation between Russia and the USA continues, it is very likely that there will be a restoration of Russian gas supplies... with the involvement of American intermediaries', stated a person familiar with the details of the negotiations.

After 2022, Europe stopped buying a significant portion of gas from Russia, but the restoration of this process could assist Moscow in overcoming opposition in Europe. Should the USA participate in gas supplies, Washington will also ensure a certain degree of control over the situation.

Bans on new agreements with Russia in Europe are planned for the end of 2025, while imports under existing agreements will last until 2027. This plan will be discussed next month with the aim of approval by the European Parliament and member states.
