How many Ukrainian refugees in Austria plan to return home: bleak figures.


According to Ukrinform, 56% of Ukrainian refugees in Austria have no intention of returning to their homeland. Only 3% already have plans to return to Ukraine.
A study by the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF) showed that the future plans of Ukrainian refugees have changed. Less than 3% of respondents plan to return to Ukraine in 2024, while this figure was 30% in 2022 and 13% in 2023. Currently, 56% of respondents have no desire to return.
12% of Ukrainian refugees responded that they want to return to Ukraine at some point, and 29% have not yet made a decision.
There are approximately 78,000 Ukrainian refugees in Austria in total, 44% of whom have already found jobs.
Regarding women, the study showed that their employment has significantly increased. While only 10% of Ukrainian women were employed in 2022, this figure rose to a quarter in 2023 and stands at 43% in 2024.
Ukrainian women most frequently work in cleaning (23%), trade and distribution (14%), healthcare (12%), and education (11%).
It is noted that the level of education of Ukrainians in Austria remains high: 75% have higher education and high qualifications in various fields. Regarding the recognition of qualifications in Austria, one and a half thousand refugees have already successfully achieved this, but half of the respondents would still like their qualifications to be recognized.
