On the modern day, July 20, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine commemorates the memory of the holy prophet Elijah - one of the most numerous saints. This holiday combines church rituals and folk traditions that have deep religious roots. The church holiday on July 20 is a day to honor the prophet Elijah, who was one of the mightiest prophets of the Old Testament. He opposed idolatry and called the people to return to the faith in the One God. He was taken to heaven in a fiery chariot and is considered the patron of thunder, rain, and lightning. On Elijah's Day, it is important to refrain from negative feelings and actions, such as swearing, envy, or conflicts. Traditionally, it is not recommended to work in the fields, chop wood, or embroider. On this day, solemn services take place in churches, and at home, water, honey, and harvest are blessed. The prophet Elijah is considered the patron of farmers and beekeepers. Folk traditions include baking bread, making dishes with honey, and decorating tables with gifts of summer. On Elijah's Day, the harvest celebration and weather forecasting are also observed. It is believed that order in the house and blessed water will help keep the household safe from misfortune. Swimming in water bodies is also not recommended on this day.
